Stevenage Station was built on the existing car park of the nearby North Station to increase the number of parking spaces at this location and create an extended mobility offer for commuters, residents and visitors. The new car park increases the existing 339 parking spaces to 622 modern bays over six levels, including 30 disabled parking bays, 27 motorcycle bays and 30 electric vehicle bays. If required, these can be extended by a further 126 previously inactive parking bays. The new multi-storey car park also provides 80 secure bicycle parking spaces – including some for cargo bikes and special bikes, such as those for people with disabilities.

Gateway to the city
Bright and colourful.
As the gateway to the town, Stevenage Station is clad in a perforated steel façade, featuring a number of the town’s landmarks. Each level of the multi-storey car park is also coated in a different colour. This helps with orientation. It also creates an attractive play of light in the dark. All colours, materials and graphics were chosen in collaboration with the local authorities to ensure that the car park blends in harmoniously with its urban surroundings and to create maximum identification with the building.

Digital Infrastructure?
State of the Art.
Stevenage Station has a ticketless parking system with ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition): A camera is installed at each entrance to the car park. When a vehicle drives in, the camera recognises the number plate and records it – people cannot be recognised. The ANPR software reads the number plate as a text file and adds the date and time of entry to it. The same happens when the vehicle leaves. This avoids long waiting and starting times, reduces CO2 emissions and keeps traffic flowing. An automatic dynamic counting system displays the number of available parking spaces, and remote video surveillance of all levels of the car park ensures maximum security for users.
