Project Northwick Park Hospital, UK

The new multi-storey car park at Northwick Park Hospital was commissioned to accommodate staff and replace an outdated facility. The client’s ambition was a modern, sustainable, and user-friendly solution. The five-level structure, designed with a VCM ramp system, provides 780 parking spaces. It also integrates 70 active and 70 passive charging points for electric vehicles as well as a digital parking management system.

Alongside the car park, the shell of a new energy centre was constructed. Installed later in the process, it replaced outdated underground utilities and modernised the hospital’s power facilities. The design ensures mutual protection between the car park and the energy centre in case of emergency. This was achieved by creating a 60-minute fire-rated compartment wall extending to level 2, combined with adapted steel beams above the energy centre shell.

The project presented major logistical challenges. Several vital hospital utilities ran in tunnels directly beneath the site, requiring meticulous planning by the management team. In addition, the location within the hospital grounds, adjacent to the one-way traffic system, demanded careful coordination. Construction activities had to be organised in such a way that hospital roads remained uncongested and the continuous flow of traffic and deliveries was not disrupted.

In view of the planned residential development around the site, a complex panel façade was designed and installed. It enhances the aesthetic appearance of the facility while harmonising with the surrounding neighbourhood.
