Siemens Erlangen: Energy efficiency, sustainability and modern mobility

Contemporary architecture, energy efficiency, sustainability and modern mobility are at the heart of the transformation of the former Siemens research site in Erlangen into a vibrant city district. Three new multi-storey car parks with a total of 2,227 parking spaces contribute to this conversion.

By 2030, developer Siemens Real Estate will have transformed the Siemens research site, which opened in 1965 in the south of the city of Erlangen, into a lively neighbourhood with an attractive campus structure. The design for the redevelopment was created by Frankfurt architects KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten. Contemporary buildings, a modern office infrastructure with an appropriate mobility concept and generous green and open spaces will be created. The entire campus is designed to be barrier-free.

For this project, general contractor HIB Huber Integral Bau was commissioned with the construction of three new multi-storey car parks for Module 2 and the façade cladding, including planning and execution, for three existing multi-storey car parks in Module 1.

210 of the 2,227 parking spaces are equipped with wallboxes.

Three modern multi-storey car parks are part of Module 2 of the Siemens Campus Erlangen.

The construction of the car parks created 2,227 new parking spaces. 210 of these are equipped with Siemens VersiCharge AC wall boxes. Charging facilities for e-bikes have been installed in the 1,500 ground-level bicycle parking spaces. A total of 48 e-chargers, or 3 per cent, are available for cyclists who want to make their way to work completely CO2-neutral. Specially separated, access-controlled areas on the ground floors of the car parks offer protection. The cycle ramps are heated to avoid the risks associated with ice or snow in winter. Control systems with temperature, ice and snow sensors ensure that the heating is automatically activated when needed. Plant rooms are centrally located at the stair cores. For environmental reasons, recycled material has been used to backfill the work areas and as a base for the paved areas.

Car park roofs equipped with photovoltaics

The sustainable, modern working environment on the Siemens campus offers even more components that take into account aspects such as energy generation and CO2 savings. The roofs of all the multi-storey car parks have been fitted with photovoltaic panels. The buildings are thus able to generate their own electricity for the car park control system, the passenger lifts and all the lighting, and also supply large parts of the Siemens campus with electricity.

Various types of climbing plants were planted in prepared substrate and attached to the façade to provide long-term greenery and contribute to the microclimate. The expanded metal facade is a ventilated, curtain walling system. It consists of individual aluminium expanded metal panels.

Barrier-free access to all floors

People with disabilities are also catered for. Stainless steel lifts provide barrier-free access to all eight floors of the split-level car parks. The handrails in the stairwell have tactile inscriptions.

Huber Project Manager Emre Kocak emphasises: “It was a challenging project with many buildings that were handed over to a satisfied customer on time. The cooperation with the client was very constructive and, thanks to the coordination of the project management, always effective and solution oriented.”
